Glass dinner plates
There are basically three sources for these glass plates today - the cheap and
cheerful glassware out of China, the antiques of olden days and the recycled format from used products.
Cheap modern glass dinner plates from China
The so called modern cheap glass products out of China are generally low quality, high volume glass dinner
plates manufactured with
cheap and often untrained labour, who operate and mind the sophisticated glass shaping machines. There is no skill
involved in their manufacture other than in the original designs, which are often poor copies of antique plates converted
into a modern day plate equivalent, or the programming of the computer operated glass making machines.
Antique glass dinner plates
Antique glass however, was generally made individually by a skilled craftsperson who would have taken pride in the
forming of it's product from the raw materials. The plates were often one offs and rarely replicated except as a batch
of dinner service size. Often made to order by a household of esteem.
Recycled products used as glass plates

More on recyled glass dinner plates
In the spirit of caring for our planet, Abundant Earth
promotes the creative re-use of materials like tableware which is produced through a process that slowly and methodically
transforms a community's throwaway glass into sparkling jewels. They sell innovative lines which are hand crafted by
melting crushed recycled glassin furnaces, adding pigment and pressing the molten glass into bowls, plates and
glasses.
Once the glass has been poured, skilled craftspeople use special torches, a keen eye for detail and artistic sensibility
to finish each piece. This whole process, from crushed glass to final art, takes three days! Each and every piece is
handmade one at a time. Simple shapes and beautiful colours make each piece a unique work of art suitable for any
occasion.
