As beers of different styles have distinctive characteristics, the appropriate glasses for each style will be the ones that accentuate those characteristics. As a rule, the more distinctive the beer, the more distinctive the glass should be. This is why you find mainstream lagers served in stock glasses. A unique product such as berliner weisse demands an equally unique german beer glasses. Using the wrong type of glass for some products will reduce the quality of the experience due to inappropriate head formation, poor aroma release, or by failing to accentuate a particular beer's sparkling/cloudy nature. Hefeweizen, Kristallweizen and Dunkles Hefeweizens are served in glasses that are tall and graceful, with a narrow base widening toward the top before narrowing slightly again. There is often a spiralling effect rising from the bottom of the glass. Kölsch is usually served in a simple, tall, straight, cylindrical 200ml glass ("Kölsch-Stange"). German Beer Glasses. Some bars serve beer in chilled or frosted german beer glasses. It's generally better to avoid this, as excessively chilled beers lose their flavour.

One note of caution German beers are usually much stronger than British ones. You might be used to drinking beer that's say 3.5% to 5%, but in German you'll find that 5% is one of the weaker beers. 7% or 8% are common and even 10% or 11% isn't exactly rare.
